Michael Illbruck, imprenditore e appassionato di vela ha impiegato più di quattro anni per testare 35 membri d’equipaggio, provare 75 vele e completare centinaia di miglia d’allenamento. Gli sforzi sono stati ricompensati: dopo le prime tre tappe, la “Illbruck” si è assicurata la testa della regata. Battling over a distance of 60,000 kilometres in 9 legs, the contestants are circumnavigating the globe, facing zero temperatures on the edge of Antarctica and raging storms in the Indian Ocean – a challenge for real professionals. Taking part for the first time in a race of this category is a German yacht with genuine prospects of victory. In fact it was rated favourite weeks in advance of the start: the “Illbruck”, skippered by John Kostecki.
Entrepreneur and sailing enthusiast Michael Illbruck had resolved to go all out from the very beginning. Over a 4-year preparation period, 35 crewmembers were tested, 75 sails tried out and thousands of training miles completed. The effort has paid off: after the first three legs the “Illbruck” has secured a clear lead.
The film, shown in the “Leinen Los” (“Casting Loose”) series, follows the adventures experienced by the “Illbruck” over the first five legs of the race. We see the triumphal reception in Cape Town as the ocean-going yacht from Leverkusen is first to cross the finishing line after 32 days – a great victory fro all involved and for the sport of sailing in Germany. Never before has a German entrant won a leg in this classic ocean race.
We witness anxious moments shortly after the start of the second leg, when a leak threatens to sink the yacht. Fortunately the only German crewmember, Toni Kolb, was able to repair the damage.
And we share many tense and exciting challenges in which skipper John Kostecki and his crew overcome highly dangerous situations.
