Ryszard Szurkowski is the best Polish cyclist in history, who, among other, was a two-time Olympic Vice-Champion, 4-time world championship medalist and 4-time winner of the Peace Race. He won the Polish Championships 27 times. After retiring from professional sports, he become a coach of the Polish National teams which won the vice-championship at the Olympic Games in Seoul. All Poles were watching him compete with Czech, East German or Soviet cyclists on the routes of the Peace Race making Szurkowski one of the Polish heroes in the 1970s.
