From Greece (Athens, 1896) to Brazil (Rio, 2016), 120 years later, the Modern Era Olympic Games are on their 31st edition, with Brazil being the first South American country to host the biggest multisport event on the planet. The Wonderful City is the background for more than 12 thousand athletes from all over the world, which will compete for medals in 42 categories. For the 15th edition of the Paralympic Games it is estimated that more than 160 countries and approximately 5 thousand athletes will overcome their limits and live their passions through 22 sports.
The Memories of Sports exhibition happens at the same time as the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games at Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro, and it reveals rare images of more than one century of Olympic Game history, from 1896 to 2012. Rare footage of every Olympic Game is gathered and shown for the first time in history. The movies shown in this exhibition were produced from  Olympic archives belonging mostly to the Fédération Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs and the International Olympic Committee.

Logo_Sports-MemoryMemories of Sports directs the public’s gaze towards the past, making a real journey backwards through time, following an Olympic history timeline from Antiquity to the Modern Era. In this journey into the past, the public will see, for the first time in Brazil, the first ever recorded sports footage, filmed by the Lumière Brothers in 1896; Leni Riefenstahl’s images of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, during the Nazi regime; footage of Olympic medalists in different categories; the participation of Brazilian athletes in the Games; and the beginning of the Paralympics in Rome in 1960. They are all unique and primitive records of both sports and cinema. Currently, modern technology enhances the public’s vision through huge panoramic screens, and renes their hearing with a sound system in which the spectator is positioned right before the images shown. Images of unique world sports moments – displayed in blocks separated by sport – for an incredible journey into the Olympic universe by the public. The image of the city of Rio de Janeiro is the backdrop for a podium in the exhibition that may be used by the public for photos or short films.

In associating their brand with the Memories of Sports exhibition, Correios highlights the value of this project in reviving the memory of the Olympic Games and the importance of Brazil as the host of the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Men, women and children that, regardless of age, ethnicity, culture, religious beliefs and social status, gather around the mythological Olympic ‑re, a worldwide symbol of enlightenment, peace and fraternity.
