The worldwide media coverage of the 31st edition of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games held in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) from August 5th to 21st (first time in South America) will be strong. “Fox Sports”, “SporTV” (Brazil), “Seven Network” (Australia), “CCTV” (China), “RAI” (Italy), “France Télévisions”, “Eurosport” and “Canal+” (France), “Canadian Broadcasting Corporation” (Canada), “BBC” (UK), are some of the world’s most important TV broadcasters that will follow the event. Television has a disruptive effect on the sport that has become, as giver of contents, an audience of strategic supplier for the media. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded “NBC Universal” (NBCU) the broadcast rights in the USA for the Olympic Games through to 2032. NBCU has acquired the broadcast rights across all media platforms, including free-to-air television, subscription television, internet and mobile. The agreement from 2021 to 2032 is valued at USD 7.65 billion, plus an additional USD 100 million signing bonus to be used for the promotion of Olympism and the Olympic values between 2015 and 2020.

The “NBC Olympics” will also provide contents in 4K Ultra HD. In Brazil, “Rede Globo”, “Rede Record” and “Rede Bandeirantes” have the rights to broadcast the games free-to-air, on cable tv and in internet. Television coverage of the Games in 8 African Countries is headed by Infront Sports & Media. “RAI”, the Italian State Television, will show the Games with more than 1.000 hours of programming (on Raidue, RaiSport1 and RaiSport2), 36 web channels and 180 hours of live radio. The figures of the Rio Olympic Games: 10.500 athletes from 204 Countries will compete in 33 sports buildings distributed in the city (Barra, Deodoro, Maracana and Copacabana), with 306 medal competitions, 28 sports (including rugby and golf for the first time) and 48 athletics disciplines. The Opening (August 5th) and Closing (August 21st) Ceremony will be held at “Maracana” (Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho).

FICTS – Federation Internationale Cinéma Télévision Sportifs (www.sportmoviestv.com), joined with 114 Member Countries (recognized by the International Olympic Committee) – as “International Federation of Sports Television” – will be in Rio during the Olympics with a delegation led by President Prof. Franco Ascani in his capacity as Member of “IOC Commission for Culture and Olympic Heritage”. FICTS supports and gives its Patronage to Expo “Sports Memory Rio 2016” which is scheduled in Rio de Janeiro from 27th July to 25th September in conjunction with Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in San Paolo and Brasilia. The itinerant event – included the International Circuit of the “World FICTS Challenge 2016” – is an audiovisual exposition that has the aim to show, after 10 years of precious work, the history of the World Olympic and Brazilian sport through cinema in 100 years. The Exposition – organised by Guanabara Filmes (directed by Josè Soares) in collaboration with the Government of the City of Rio de Janeiro, with the Brazilian Post Office (Correios) sponsor of the local Organizing Committee for Rio 2016 Olympic Games, aims to enhance the universality and the positive values of sport through the exciting images of esteemed directors and qualified workers in the world of cinema and television. The “Exposition Sports Memory Rio 2016” – that will be held in the Post Office Centro Culturale “Core Business” of the manifestation – will be articulated in 60 Projections (coming from 60 Countries as well as Olympic footages), Meetings and Awards and will be divided in three part: 1) Worldwide sports History; 2) Brazilian sports History; 3) 2016 Rio Olympics with a room where will be possible watch live trough 16 HD channels, the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
